Sun SparcStation 20...
January 8th, 2007 - 03:10pm
- Sun SparcStation 20, dual HyperSparc 180 Mhz, 384 MB RAM, 9 GB hardisk and an extra 4 GB harddisk. Bought this machine in 2003 or 2004. Came originally with dual SuperSparc 75 Mhz and 128 MB RAM. Upgraded to dual 180 Mhz HyperSparcs and 384 MB RAM in 2005. Ran into some problems to get it up running and usable as a workstation: Linux does not run reliable on HyperSparcs in SMP mode in the latest kernels (2.6.x), OpenBSD/sparc doesn't have SMP and NetBSD crashes when I tried to use my cg14 with it. Also firefox does not compile on NetBSD sparc. Hence, currently running Solaris 9 with CDE (GNOME 2 is very very slow...) Still quite snappy for it's age under CDE... However, it feels slower under Solaris 9 then under NetBSD. Regularly used to do some work and getting to know Solaris more in depth.
- Changed from Solaris 9 to NetBSD 2.1. Turned out that my cg14 was bad. So, I'm in dire need of a new one :)
- Got 2 Sun cg14 framebuffers. Installed a 18GB SCSI disk in it and reinstalled Solaris 9. Gecko based browsers (think Seamonkey, Firefox) are way to slow on this thing. I installed Opera after reading this blog entry: http://my.opera.com/Macallan/blog/show.dml/206808 and I must say, Opera is running fast on this quite old and slow machine :)
